Beginners’ Guide to Crystals: Part 1 – Origin of Crystals

6 mins read

Have you ever taken interest in crystals but aren’t sure where to begin? This could be your calling to embark on your crystal journey! 🔮

Before my crystal journey, I have always desired to understand and appreciate the genesis of crystals and why many hold them so special. This week, we are exploring the origins of these beautiful and mystical solid materials; what they are, how they are formed, and how they work.

I’d like to think of this article as an Orientation Program where we introduce and break the ice between you and your very own crystal journey. We hope that you find this useful and without further ado, here it is:

What is a crystal

A mixture of minerals, wherein the atoms and molecules are arranged in a uniform and repeated three-dimensional order (Eason, 2018).

How Crystals are formed

Crystals are formed as atoms are combined; they grow from many types of elements such as water, melted rocks and vapours. Depending on the minerals, temperatures and pressures in their respective environments, these crystals form in various colours and shapes (Geology Page, 2017).

For example, Bumblebee Jaspers are formed by carbonate minerals from volcanic fumarole environments. Their distinctive yellow, orange and black shades are due to the presence of sulfur, arsenic sulfide minerals and manganese oxides (Celestial Earth Minerals, n.d.).

Additionally, crystals can take up to thousands of years to form.

The Science of Crystals

Crystals, which are solids, possess energies due to the atoms and molecules they are made out of. Although the particles in solids are closely compacted, slight movements are still created which results in vibrations (Eason, 2018).

Particularly, crystals vibrate at a stable and non-changing frequency of 32,768Hz (Embleton, 2021), while humans have a much lower vibrational frequency range of 3Hz–17Hz (Ren et.al, 2018). The range of human vibrational frequency unveils the unstable energies of humans; They change under different situations like when we’re sad or happy, or when we are talking to different people.

This essentially means that crystals have more powerful energies due to their stability and as such, are able to influence our less powerful and unstable energies upon interaction. This leads to alignment and balance in our bodies’ energy fields (MacDougal, 2022)

How Crystals Work

While there is no concrete scientific evidence, it is believed that crystals promote healing properties through the combination of energy interaction and placebo effect.

They allow positive energies to flow into our bodies and interact with our chakras while removing the negative energies. Additionally, because they are naturally extracted, they are instilled with natural healing energies coming from the sun, oceans and the moon. As such, they improve our physical and mental wellness by balancing our misaligned energies (The Times of India, 2019)

Different crystals promote different healing properties and with thousands of crystals, one might be overwhelmed over which crystals to acquire based on what he or she needs. Common healing properties that crystals carry are:

  • Love
  • Protection
  • Abundance
  • Grounding
  • Connection
  • Communication
  • Spiritual meaning
  • Stress relief

It is important to note that crystals are not the ultimate solution to physical ailments since illnesses are not engendered by negative energies and wavelengths.
