Crystals are literally geological time capsules of Earth – they give scientists insights of the plate tectonic activities millions of years ago as well as the Earth’s eruption history. It’s so fascinating how crystals carry the histories of the Earth, making them so much more meaningful to own and collect!
If you like history (and crystals), this article is perfect for you! We’re listing some of the oldest crystals in the world and how they were used by the ancient civilisation.
Zircon
Scientists have declared Zircon is the oldest mineral in the world at 4.4 billion years old – almost as old as the Earth! Its chemical make-up makes it so strong that it has lasted throughout years of geological events such as erosion.
Scientists are suggesting that the chemical ratios of these tiny crystals indicate that there may have been living organisms during the Hadean period (Earth’s earliest history) – a hard to believe fact considering that this period is likened to hell, where there were instances of volcanism, molten surfaces and asteroid impacts.
With its durable nature, Zircon has been used in jewellery for centuries, more notably in the Victorian era, which skyrocketed the gemstone’s popularity. Additionally, many people in the ancient times would use the crystal for restful sleep and protection from evil spirits.
In modern times, Zircon is believed to reduce one’s anxiety and stress, increase one’s wisdom and rationality.
Myth busting: Zircon and Zirconia are commonly confused, but are entirely different minerals. Zirconia is commonly used as diamond stimulants as they look very alike to diamonds and can be synthetically created. Additionally, Zirconia has a high refractive index. (can insert picture of Zirconia)

Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli, a crystal of striking dark blue colour, has been dated back since 6000 BCE and was used in many ancient civilisations. Traces of Lapis Lazuli could be found during the Neolithic period (7000 – 1700 BC) and was first used by the habitants of Hindu Kush (modern Afghanistan).
Ancient civilisations viewed Lapis Lazuli with great significance as the crystal was used as a religious symbol and reflection of high-status. For example, in Ancient Egypt, judges wore Lapis Lazuli amulets in the shape of Maat, an Egyptian goddess symbolising truth. Pharaohs also wore Lapis Lazuli jewelry and even brought these gemstones to their tombs, believing that they would be provided with protection in the after-life.
Fun fact: Did you know that Cleopatra used ground Lapis Lazuli as eyeshadow due to its stunning blue pigment?
Lapis Lazuli also became popular during The Renaissance in the 15th to 16th century. Interestingly, it was sought after by many painters, who would use powdered Lapis Lazuli as pigment. Powdered Lapis Lazuli the colour Ultramarine, the most expensive pigment in the world.
Our co-founders have recently travelled to the Vatican Museum, where they found incredible paintings (like The Last Judgement) made with crystals including Lapis Lazuli (Check it out over here).
Check out our Lapis Lazuli collection here.
Colombianite
Colombianite, a type of Obsidian glass, is a Psuedotektite founded in the Columbian region 30 million years ago. Psuedotektikes are specimens which are almost visually alike to Tektites, hence the “Psuedo”. Unlike Tektites, which are of meteoric or extra-terrestrial origin, Pseudotektites are remnants of ancient obsidian or glass!
They were considered sacred stones by the Columbian Indians from the Muisca tribes, and referred to Columbianite as “Piedra Rayo”, which means “Lightning Stone”. It was believed to have direct links to the Divine and were even used by the Shamans to communicate with the higher beings.
The ancient stone is thought to possess great transformative properties, allowing us to remove past traumas and emotional baggage to reach our highest potentials. It is also believed that Colombianites can help us recall our past lives, thereby stimulating our inner spirit.

Jade
Ever wonder why Jade is heavily associated with Chinese culture? Well, this goes back as far as the Stone Age, where traces of the gemstone have been found in Ancient Chinese ornaments as well as weapons. It is also the first crystal to be mentioned in Chinese historical texts.
By 3000 BCE, Jade had taken the role of the Royal Gemstone, being used in Imperial ceremonies, furnishings and carvings. Jade became symbols of health, status, spirituality and purity. Because of this, Jade had and still continues to have great significance in Chinese culture and history.
Did you know? People of great status and wealth in Ancient China were buried in Jade burial suits! It was believed to give these important people immortality and honour.
Today, Jade is known to be a lucky and protective stone, keeping one from harm. It also calms an overreactive mind. Additionally, it is still very widely used in Feng Shui and it represents health, healing and longevity.
Check out our Jade collection here.
Opal
Not only is Opal rich in bright blazing colours (of red, green, yellow and blue), it is also rich in history! The gemstone was discovered in 4,000 BCE by a famous anthropologist, Louis Leakey in Kenya.
Opals were used by many ancient civilisations. The Greeks believed that the stone would provide owners foresight, while the Arabians believed that the stone came from heaven as a result of flashes of lightning. The stone also symbolised purity and hope to the Ancient Romans.
These were also heavily used by the Aztec and Mayan Indians during the 14th century for ornamental and ceremonial pieces. The gemstone also had a great spiritual significance to these civilisations, being used in rituals and temples to honour the Sun. Unfortunately, up until the 1800s, the popularity of Opal had reduced greatly with the ultimate collapse of the Aztec Empire.
In modern times, the Opal is associated with the Sacral Chakra, stimulating creativity and originality within the user. Emotionally, it helps with negative emotions like anger, and it also helps one with self-expression.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Zircon is the oldest mineral in the world at 4.4 billion years old and is almost as old as the Earth! Read more about it here (anchor link to Zircon extract).
Radiometric dating methods are used to determine the age of crystals! This is the same methodology for determining the age of fossils. Geologists examine the proportion of isotopes in them and compare them against their known abundance on Earth. This works as geologists know the rate of decay of radioactive elements and hence by measuring the proportion of isotopes, they are able to tell the age.
Crystals grow from many types of elements such as water, melted rocks and vapours. Depending on the minerals, temperatures and pressures in their respective environments, these crystals can take thousands to billions of years to form!
Scientists have found that ancient Quartz crystals have been around for 2 to 3 billion years! They have also been used by many ancient civilisations like in Ancient Egypt and Greece.

]]>However, it is important to note that the shape of the crystals would not inhibit their properties or change the type of energy it gives off. A rose quartz pyramid would be just as heart-opening as any other piece of rose quartz, but the shape you choose will have a subtle effect on how their energy is being channelled.
In this article, we will cover common crystal shapes and their meanings.
Crystals found in a cubic formation are associated with the root chakra. If you need some grounding energy in your life, Cubic crystals might be the perfect shape for you to reconnect with the powerful energy of the earth. This crystal shape channels stability and steadfastness, being reminded of your roots and standing your ground. One of our favourite crystal cubes is the Wonderstone Cube.
Pyramids are believed to symbolise the rays of the sun, thought to harness high vibrational energies. The shape of the pyramid is believed to represent the earth’s foundation at the bottom and the pointed top represents the pathway to the higher realms of consciousness. This particular shape is one of the most powerful tools for manifestation which can also help filter out any negative energies and clear blockages. It’s no surprise that this sacred geometrical shape has been popular since ancient times!
Spheres being a perfect symmetrical crystal shape brings balance, peace and relaxing energies into its environment, and allow energy to emit in all directions. Spheres are also popular for its ability to stimulate the flow of positive energy in chaotic environments whilst assisting in uplifting a person’s energy field, thereby improving their wellbeing. The spherical shape is perfect for channelling energy around the room, as spheres are known to emit the crystal properties uninhibitedly around and hence it is the perfect shape for a large room.
These small crystals are perfect for carrying around with you so your energy can entrain with the stable frequency of the crystal. The more you keep your crystals close to your body, the more your energy aligns with their vibration. One of the benefits of tumbled stones is the fact that they are travel-sized, perfect for carrying around in your pocket or purse to generate positive energy wherever you go.
In addition, tumbled stones work amazingly well together when placed in crystal grids, to boost your manifestations.
Crystal hearts stand for inner peace, kindness, love, and tenderness. It is a popular and effective stone in targeting your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual blockages associated with the concept of compassion. This crystal shape also has a powerful vibration that heals your heart, balances your heart chakra, and instils serenity to your nerves giving a positive feeling to the mind and body.
The obelisk amplifies energy and focuses it out through the top of the point. These crystals help people attain or keep good mental, physical, and emotional balance. Obelisk crystals are used to dissipate negative energy making it a useful shape for locations like the workplace or any room for that matter, in which there may be stress or conflict.
Crystal obelisks and towers work the same way, with only the number of sides being different. Obelisks is a four-sided shaft of stone while towers can be four-sided, six-sided or even eight-sided.
Crystal Wands have so many benefits and healing properties that it is sometimes called a “magical wand”. The elongated and cylindrical shape of most wands enables the crystal to focus its healing energy in a straight line so it can be directed and used on a specific part of the body. It’s the power of your intentions that moves the energies of the crystal wand so it is important to program your wands for their intended purpose.
Palm Stones are used to reduce stress and calm the nerves, perfect to hold during meditation. It is also an overarching term for Thumb Stones, Gallets, and Touch Stones.
Also known as worry stones, thumb stones are small and often have an indent on one side to place your thumb.
These stones are usually larger in size, thick, and circular. These are used interchangeably with palm stones, but the larger variants.
Touch stones are very large palm stones and are often similar to freeform stones.
In conclusion, the list of shapes is not exhaustive and to determine what shapes to use, you can pick a crystal that calls out to you and see if it aligns with your needs.
Why are crystal shapes important?Different crystal shapes give and receive energy differently. Therefore, it is important to choose the best crystal shape that aligns perfectly with your intentions in order to enhance and magnify your transformation.
Do the different crystal shapes affect the purpose and properties of the crystals?
The shape of the crystals would not inhibit their properties or change the type of energy it gives off.
Are raw crystals better than man-made shaped crystals?
Raw crystals are untouched, untreated crystals while man-made polished crystals have gone through a process to smooth them out. However, the tumbling process does not take away any of the crystals' energy or vibration and holds the same properties as the raw ones.

Together with manifesting and meditation, these crystals are able to redirect or channel your energy and cleanse any blockages in the chakras. The act of meditation and manifestation with crystals has been practiced by many cultures around the world for thousands of years. However, aside from meditation, how does one use a crystal?
3 uses for crystals besides meditation:
1. Crystal elixir
Crystal elixirs, or crystal-infused water, is a great way to connect with the energy of your crystals. Creating these elixirs is fairly easy and simple to do. Before you begin, it is important to cleanse your crystals by running them under water or by leaving them in the moonlight for a while.
Just add these newly cleansed crystals to a bottle or jug of fresh drinking water and let them sit, immersing the water with its energy. After that, you are ready to take a sip! The taste of the drink might differ but you should pay attention to how you feel when you drink it as taking it in should help you gain qualities associated with the stone.
A crucial step to take note of prior to making the elixir is to research on which crystals are water-safe and non-toxic. Some crystals would dissolve or crack in water while some would release toxic minerals and elements that could prove to be detrimental to one’s health when ingested. Water-safe crystals include clear quartz, rose quartz and tiger’s eye. However, if you are keen on the qualities of one particular crystal but it is unsafe to use in water, you can place it on the top of a jar or bottle of water overnight and allow its energy to reach the water without any actual contact.
2. Crystal bath
Bathing with crystals is one of the most powerful and also the most relaxing way to absorb and gain the energy of these beneficial stones. It is known that water is a great conductor and will amplify the frequencies of the crystals and supercharge your intentions.
All you have to do is to bring your crystals into the bath with you and let them soak. By doing this, you can absorb their energy even more potently while offering yourself ultimate relaxation. Moonstone is an example of a great crystal to place in your bath water. It is one of the best stones for calming your emotions. It acts as a stabilizer as it soothes instability and stress. A plus point is that under water, the moonstone shines through, showcasing its beautiful flashes.
Another stone is Larimar. It is known for its soothing effects as it is a crystal of serenity, promoting relaxation in every aspect. This blue stone cools tempers and calms fears. It also relieves stress and nurtures the physical and emotional bodies. You can imagine floating in the sea as its soft hues of blues and turquoise streaked with white patterns resemble ocean waters.
Again, use the same precautions with your crystals as mentioned in the earlier point before putting them in your bath as many crystals will dissolve underwater. It is important to take note that these stones can only go in water for brief periods of time as if it were to be any longer, their vibrant colors might change.
3. Crystals for plants
Unknown to many, crystals are extremely beneficial for plants too. One of the main benefits of using crystals in your home garden is to promote healthy plant growth. By placing garden crystals in the soil of your plants, the pure energy emitted by the stone assists the plants in their growth. Additionally, they can also help to improve the flavor and nutritional value of fruits and vegetables in your home garden.
Another benefit of using crystals in your garden is that they are able to help repel harmful insects and animals. The natural vibrations of these crystals can help to keep pests and diseases at bay.
Moss Agate is one of the best stones for plants and gardening. This stone promotes a stronger connection between you and your plant. It can help keep your plant healthy by absorbing any negative energy surrounding it. Some other examples of the best crystals for plants include amethyst, lapis lazuli, citrine, and pyrite.
A great way to effectively use these garden crystals is to place the gem on top of the plant’s soil or in the soil, near its roots. Otherwise, you can make a crystal elixir, like how we mentioned earlier, and spray it on the leaves of the plants.
Conclusion
Crystals are beautiful creations of the Earth brought out to provide many benefits for all aspects of our lives. While they provide healing properties that are evoked through meditation, they serve to have more than one method of use. From crystal elixirs to gardening, you would be able to make full use of their potent healing powers to your advantage.

]]>We recently visited the Vatican Museum and were pleasantly surprised to find many crystals in the museum. The crystals were both displayed as artefacts and also incorporated in some of the most famous art pieces in the world. Any of these pieces are now priceless and would be extremely expensive to purchase!
At the time of creation, these crystals were very expensive with Lapis Lazuli at the same price of gold! This is due to the extreme rarity of these crystals.
For those not familiar with the Vatican museum, it is one of the biggest and most visited museums in the world. With over 70,000 artefacts, this museum contains the massive collection of the Catholic Church since 1506. In this post, you will discover some of the artefacts that we saw, which contain crystals! At the end of this post, you can find out how to get to this amazing museum. It should definitely be on your bucket list!
Lapis Lazuli in The Sistine Chapel
Pictures are not allowed in this Chapel, which has its walls and ceiling almost entirely painted by Michelangelo. We love how this makes the Chapel particularly special, because you have to see it with your own eyes! We did however manage to get a picture of The Last Judgement, which is a floor to ceiling painting on the altar wall by Michelangelo of 300 figures - containing many Saints who rise and descend to their fates as they are judged by Christ. The figures are portrayed in the blue sky, and the azure blue which is in fact a dye from Lapis Lazuli.
Lapis Lazuli Mosaic in The Gallery of The Candelabra
The tour guide points down to the ground, where we see a mosaic of Italian Cypress in the marble floor, with a background of rich deep blue. This beautiful mosaic is the coat of arms of Pope Leo XIII in the middle of the gallery.
Lapis Lazuli was used to colour this blue, she points out. The blue is intensely striking and there is no doubt this is Lapis Lazuli. There is nowhere else you can get this beautiful colour.
Luigi Medici, his son Paolo Medici, and Giuseppe Rinaldi designed the spectacular inlaid marble floor. They used marble found during excavations of the Tiber River in Testaccio.
Malachite with Saints
In a very intricate trunk, there lies an artefact of sorts made mostly of Malachite. Within the Malachite there are pictures of 2 Saints, ornately embellished. This is one of the artefacts preserved as part of the Vatican Apostolic Library.
Lapis Lazuli in the Greek Cross Room
The Greek Cross Room gets its name from the shape of the room which takes the form of a plus sign. Unlike the Latin cross, which has an elongated descending arm, the arms of the Greek Cross are equal. This room was designed between 1775 and 1799.
One of the first things you will notice is the stunning mosaic floor in the centre of the room. The blue section of the mosaic is made of Lapis Lazuli, which is known to have the same value as gold as it can only be found in Afghanistan! The design is of a shield with the head of the goddess of war, Athena.
Artefacts of Onyx and Porphyry
The Vatican is filled with Imperial Porphyry and these came from a single mine in Egypt, the Mons Porphyrites. Everyone wanted porphyry, and if you wanted it, you had to steal it. Imperial porphyry value is high in that the stone only exists in Europe in things the Romans built.
In the Vatican, there is not only a huge chest of Porphyry, but also a very massive Porphyry bathtub for the mad Roman Emperor Nero.
Adorned throughout the Vatican Museum are numerous artefacts of Onyx vases, which look very much like the banded Onyx mini vases and cups which we have instore!

You can see the immensely detailed and beautiful patterns on the malachite of this altar.
Since ancient times, crystals have been prized for their beauty, rarity and properties. Throughout the years, we still continue to appreciate the timeless beauty of these crystals, which will hardly fade or deteriorate with time and in fact increase in rarity and value.
Getting to the Vatican Museum
The Vatican Museum is easily accessible from Rome, Italy and we would recommend anyone to make a trip there. The museum has one of the most amazing collections of the world, and it's also located in one of the most interesting countries of the world - Vatican City.

What is a Crystal Grid?
A crystal grid involves the act of physically putting an array of stones together in a symmetrical pattern to amplify the metaphysical properties of each crystal. Crystal grids, together with the user’s set intentions, are thought to channel the properties of the stone and release an energetic frequency. The user will then be able to absorb the palpable energy that is said to fulfil the set intentions and set the energy of the space.
How to set up a Crystal Grid?
Step 1: Set your intention
Step 2: Choose your crystals
Step 4: Get Creative!
Begin placing your crystals on the preferred grid pattern while keeping your intention in mind. Activate your grid by placing your main master crystal in the middle of the grid. Work your way to place the other remaining crystals in an interval pattern.
Pro-tip: Should your crystals have points (ie. tower-shaped), ensure that they are faced outwards, away from the centre. Doing so allows the crystals’ energy to flow towards the remainder crystals in the grid, and therefore, the user.
Location of Crystal Grid
According to Feng Shui Masters, the placement of crystals would depend on the user’s intention and the Bagua areas of the home.
For example, if one would want to activate the energy of an Abundance crystal grid, the South-East area of the home (or the Wealth and Prosperity area) would be a great location. It could also be just the in the user’s work or study room.

]]>INTRODUCTION
At Glace, we love collecting crystals! However, have you ever felt uncomfortable or had a sense of lethargy when placing certain crystals together? Although all crystals can theoretically work together, some crystal collectors may be more sensitive and feel overwhelmed by the energies of different crystal combinations.
Do note that there is no definitive list of ideal and non-ideal crystal combinations. This is because their lists are non-exhaustive, and whether or not the combinations are ideal can depend on many factors such as your intentions and sensitivity to energies.
The general principle is to pair crystals that generally have the same intentions – this is so that their energies are neither overpowering one over the other nor do they cancel out each other.
COMPLEMENTARY CRYSTALS (BASED ON SIMILAR INTENTIONS)
Here are some examples of complementary crystals based on similar intentions:
Complementary Crystals for Peaceful Rest and Sleep: Amethyst, Amazonite, Blue Lace Agate, Blue Scheelite
Note: Although the crystals above complement one another each of them have their respective healing properties. This means that even without pairing your crystal with other complementary crystals, it would still be able to achieve the intention you have set.
CONFLICTING CRYSTALS
Depending on the intentions you have set into your crystals, here are some common examples of conflicting crystals:
WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE CONFLICTING CRYSTALS
If you’ve been collecting conflicting crystals and have experienced disruptions in your energies, you may do the following:
1. Place the Crystals in different locations (based on your intentions)

Additionally, when crystals are cleansed, their healing capabilities are revitalised, which allows us to continue working with them in our healing journey.
Here is our Article Menu (You may click the parts you want to skip to!)
As a rule of thumb, you would need to cleanse your crystals when you feel that they have become duller. They could also feel heavier due to the energies they have absorbed. As such, determining how often you should cleanse your crystals depends on how often you work with them.
A general principle would be to cleanse your crystals at least once every month. When you use crystals for “heavy-lifting” of negative energies, they should be cleansed more often (eg. bi-weekly, weekly, or even every few days). Meanwhile, crystals which are less worked with do not have to be cleansed as much (ie. cleansed once a month).
Using the energies from the sunlight or moonlight allow the crystals to be cleansed and recharged effectively.
General guideline for better effectiveness:
However, some crystals can turn brittle and even lose their colour under sunlight. Avoid cleansing these crystals with this method (this is a non-exhaustive list):
It is said when the smoke of the palo santo passes the crystals, it carries with it the negative energies absorbed by the crystals, allowing the crystals to return to their original vibrational frequencies.
Ignite the tip of the palo santo and let its smoke pass your crystals for about 30-60 seconds. This method is suitable for all types of crystals.

This method is believed to neutralise the negative energies inside the crystals.
General guideline for better effectiveness:
However, some crystals can dissolve or be damaged underwater. Avoid cleansing these crystals with this method (this is a non-exhaustive list):
Another method of cleansing crystals is through the use of sound. It is believed that the sonic vibrational frequencies from these tools not only clear the negative energies of the crystals but also amplify the crystals’ healing capabilities.
To use the singing bowl, surround it with the crystals you desire to cleanse. In a clockwise direction, move your mallet and let it produce a ringing sound. Continue producing the sound for 5 – 10 minutes.
There are particular crystals with vibrational frequencies strong enough to cleanse themselves as well as other crystals. To use this cleansing method, place your crystals next to or on these powerful crystals for at least a few hours or overnight.
Below is a non-exhaustive list of crystals that can cleanse other crystals
This method is suitable for all crystals.

]]>High-Quality Chrysocolla exhibits bright blue, turquoise colors. Those are the most sought-after specimens of Chrysocolla. The color is caused by the presence of copper in the mineral composition of the gemstone when forming.
Take care to check if Chrysocolla you purchase is dyed as there are quite a few Howlite dyed to Blue and Green on the market! There is no straightforward way of determining if the Chrysocolla is dyed but generally having only blue and green colors and no browns is one of the signs of it being dyed. Taking a close look at the Malachite in this piece, you can see the distinctive swirls and bands of Malachite, and the texture of genuine Malachite is very smooth as opposed to 'foamy' or 'airy'. Additionally, take a look at the cracks on the piece. If it is dyed, there will be a build-up of color within the cracks. Lastly, if the crystal is dyed, it will also fade in color or the color will run after wiping with alcohol.
Chrysocolla is the stone of hermits and monks. It diminishes anxiety and depression that one may have in seclusion. It also improves communication and encourages self-awareness. Chrysocolla draws out guilt, heals heartache and increases the capacity to love.
Women, especially older wise women, may carry this stone to express their knowledge and experience through artistic endeavours such as writing, painting, music, etc. Gift this stone to first-time mothers, grand-mothers to help them balance their new caring role with their own need for freedom and independence.
As it helps with seclusion, Chrysocolla is a great stone for those who live alone.
